Academic Excellence – a Trademark of Downers Grove
Schools
Downers Grove
is home to several school districts, the two largest
being District 58 and District 99.
District 58 has grown to include
eleven elementary and two middle schools serving 5,000
students. District 58 students consistently
out-perform others in standardized test scores at both
the state and national levels.
Community High School District 99
operates two high schools with a combined enrollment of
5,358 students. Both high schools have developed a
reputation for academic excellence. Approximately
80% of the district's graduates pursue some form of
higher education. District 99 college entrance scores
(ACT/SAT) fall above the 90th percentile nationally.
Each year, members of the senior class receive a myriad
of scholarships, honors, awards and medals for academic
achievements and leadership.
District 99 has been the recipient
of numerous awards including the Miliken Foundation
Award for Teaching Excellence, Golden Apple Awards, the
Disney Award, Tandy Technology Awards and boasts an
Illinois Teacher of the Year finalist. The music
departments have been recognized, earning state and
national honors. District 99 is an Illinois State Board
of Education Demonstration Site for Excellence in
Reading. The District's Mentoring Program has been a
model for programs throughout the nation.
In 1998, voters overwhelmingly
approved a $50 million referendum for additions and
improvements at each school. This has resulted in
the creation of modern classrooms with state-of-the-art
technology, student resource centers, contemporary music
facilities, new field houses and more.
Downers Grove has many private and
parochial school alternatives including
Avery Coonley,
St Joseph Catholic School, and
St Mary of Gostyn Catholic School. The Village is
also home to
Midwestern University. Additionally,
Northwood University, the
College of DuPage,
Benedictine University,
Benet Academy, and
Montini Catholic High School are located just
outside of the Village boundaries and serve all of
DuPage County. All of the Chicago area's leading
public and private higher education establishments are
located within an hour's drive from the Village.
