Townships
Each township is governed by an elected four-member
Board of Trustees and administered by the elected
township supervisor. Other township elected officials
are the assessor, highway commissioner, and clerk.
Township services include general welfare assistance,
youth and senior citizen services, assessment of
property, and maintenance of roads in unincorporated
areas. Four townships fall within the boundaries of the
Village of Downers Grove.

DuPage County Government operates, by Illinois Revised
Statutes, under the township form of government. The
County's nine townships lie in six County Board
Districts. The governing body of the County is the
DuPage County Board comprising of 24 members, with four
elected from each district. Overseeing the County Board
is the County Board Chairman, who is elected at large.
Downers Grove is in District 3.
Other county elected officials are
the auditor, circuit court clerk, coroner, recorder,
regional superintendent of schools, sheriff, state's
attorney, and treasurer. County services include:
licensing and certificates, such as marriage, birth and
death; appeals for assessment; tax collection; criminal
prosecution; jail facilities; county highways; forest
preserves; public health; convalescent center; senior
citizen services; job training; animal control; and the
conduct of elections.

The Illinois General Assembly, composed of a 59-member
Senate and a 118-member House of Representatives, is
responsible for enacting, amending, or repealing laws,
passing resolutions, adopting appropriation bills and
conducting inquiries on proposed legislation. It also
acts on amendments to the United States Constitution
submitted by Congress, proposes amendments to the
Illinois Constitution, and takes responsibility for
impeachment and conviction of executive and judicial
officeholders in the state.
